Bareis Hall Renovation

Project Scope

Tuttle was awarded general trades, mechanical and electrical parts of the contract to complete renovations of an existing science building, Bareis Hall. The project could not be started until spring quarter ended (June 2005) and needed to be complete before winter quarter (November 2005). Originally constructed in 1964 Bareis, Heidelberg’s center for the physical sciences contains the 80-seat Frost Lecture Hall. Also housed there are offices, the computer center, the water quality laboratory, classrooms and labs for biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics and water resources.

Project Accomplishments

This very difficult project was completed in six months. The project consisted of renovating a 3-story science building, including new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. It was further complicated by being connected to two other buildings that had to be kept in operation at all times. Dust and noise levels had to be kept to a minimum during certain hours as the adjacent buildings are offices and classrooms. There were no additional funds for the project and the budget had been established seven years before. By working with "hand-selected" quality subcontractors (Vaughn Industries and Warner Mechanical ) and the Architect, many value engineering ideas were incorporated to meet the budget constraints.
